Westbury Sports kept their slim hopes of moving out of the bottom two alive on Tuesday night with a 5-3 win away to Leigh Athletic. The win is the latest result in a run of great form that’s seen Westbury more than double their season’s points since April. Elliott Collinson scored twice and was added to by Dean Morris and Ben Smith goals while Daniel Eaton, Greg Travers and Dale Zinyemba scored for the ‘Tics.
Tintwistle Athletic clinched promotion in their last game with a narrow 3-2 win at Uppermill. The win secures second place by a single goal as they finished level on points with Bolton Lads & Girls Club. Niall Cannon, James Crossland and Dan Amesbury netted for Tinny; Robert Flynn scored both goals for the hosts who still have a game to play and a chance to finish in seventh place.
Two sides playing for the final time this season were Breightmet United and Radcliffe Juniors with the latter picking up the three points ensuring they finish in fourth in their debut season. Gary McShane scored United’s goal as they finished ninth.
Wythenshawe Amateurs Res rounded off their campaign with a tenth win in eleven games, winning 3-1 at home to Walshaw Sports Res. Luke Hibbert scored twice, seeing him finish on 42 goals in 21 appearances, Rhys Jones getting the other goal.
Atherton Town Res were victors by the same scoreline as they hosted Stockport Georgians. Adam Griffiths, Matt Jackson and Danny Kerr all scored as Town finished in fourth spot. Dave Brocklehurst got the consolation for Georgians who end the campaign in tenth place.
It went down to the wire in Division Four as only a win for East Manchester Academy would do on their trip to New Alder Park if they were to secure the title. George Etchells scored twice to add to Sam Jones and Tom Beswick goals, earning them the three points required to crown them as champions.
Matty Campbell and Barry Massay were on target for the hosts but it wasn’t enough to prevent East from celebrating their success.
Westbury Sports didn’t pull off the great escape they had hoped for as they drew 2-2 at Boothstown but they can be proud of their form in the final straight of the season. Adam Howe and Elliott Collinson scored for Westbury to see them finish one point behind the team above them. Jamie Royle and Billy Lindley got the hosts’ goals in the draw as they finished a respectable mid-table.
Rochdale Sacred Heart Res completed their campaign in emphatic style as they won 7-2 at Stockport Georgians Res. The champions ensured the margin was 11 points between them and second place with the win, their 18th victory from the 20 games.
