Football is back! The 2019/20 season is finally here and we saw plenty of action in the Premier Division, Division One and Division Two on the opening day.

Premier Division
Champions, Hindsford got their defence off with a point on the road as they travelled to Belle Vue Sports Village. Alexander Honeyball’s goal earned a point for the visitors in the 1-1 draw against Manchester Gregorians. It was the same scoreline at St Johns Street where Springhead were held by Walshaw Sports. Leighton Stephenson was on target for the hosts with Venancio Monteiro getting Walshaw’s reply.

The spoils were shared at Cromley Road where Stockport Georgians and Beechfield United played out a six-goal thriller in an enthralling season opener. The point gained will be a good one from the hosts’ point of view being 3-1 down at the break as Michael Rodden’s brace plus Samuel John’s strike meant the game ended 3-3.

Newly promoted Pennington travelled to Crossford Bridge for their season opener to take on Old Alts. Vinny Mukendi and Keith Clarkson were both on target in the 2-2 draw with Sean Dorsey and Anthony Hughes getting the goals for the hosts.

After finishing fourth last season, Heyside got off to a winning start in tight affair with Chadderton Res at ARK Fleetech Stadium. Josh Briddon and Mark Hopwood both scored first half goals before Briddon added a third for his side to earn Heyside a 3-2 win. Oumar Camara and Joseph Pennington got Chaddy’s goals in their opening day defeat.

Rochdale Sacred Heart end the opening weekend top of the pile after their 2-0 victory at home to Royton Town. Jacob Ngoy and Jordan Harper both scored for the hosts to give them three points with a clean sheet to boot.

Division One
There were five games played in Division One with no draws in any of them and all of which had plenty of goals to report on.

Elton Vale were the biggest scorers of the day as they won 6-4 at home to Wilmslow Albion. Jack Alderson got his season underway with a hat-trick for the hosts and was joined on the score sheet by Shane Birtles, Lee Bruce and Adam Nuttall.

However, East Manchester top the table following their victory over Altrincham Hale. Eddie Lamb and Alex Elliott both netted braces plus a Ben Fenton strike gave the hosts a 5-2 win with Ben Vincent and Jack Yates scoring Hale’s replies at Wright Robinson.

Bolton Lads & Girls Club kicked off their season with a 4-1 win at home to Uppermill and are in second place. Kristian Lee Preston, Ashley Womack and Adam Spencer (2) got Bolton’s goals while Sam Bagshaw got Uppermill’s solitary goal of the afternoon.

Moorside Rangers also registered a 4-1 win to start their campaign as they saw off Leigh Athletic at Agecroft Farm. Danny Shryane (2), Liam Dorrian and Ashley Briggs scored for Rangers and puts them in third.

Jordan Lloyd, Gareth Shaw and Nathan Randell all scored once to give Atherton Town a 3-0 victory at home to Govan Athletic to ensure a perfect start for the men from Butler Park.

Division Two
FC Unsworth started their Manchester Football League era in winning fashion with a 6-1 win away to Hindsford Res. Benjamin Chambers got The Tonics’ goal but wasn’t enough on the day at Squires Lane.

AFC Monton returned to MFL action in style after they eased to a 9-0 win over Astley & Tyldesley. Sam McMahon (3), Wes Bancroft (2), Cade Culf, Liam Foster, Josh Wilson and Chris Baguley all scored for the Ammies at New Alder Park to put them on top of the table.

Hollinwood enjoyed a winning start as they saw off Breightmet United at Wright Robinson, running out 6-0 victors.

There were 1-1 draws in the two remaining games in the division as Hindley Juniors and Irlam Steel met at Harrison Playing Fields and Wythenshawe Amateurs Res hosted Rochdale Sacred Heart Res at Hollyhedge Park.
