Despite the amount of rain which fell across the region in the build up to the weekend, we were glad to see that all scheduled fixtures went ahead on the second Saturday of the 2019/20 season.
Promoted side Pennington are riding high from their great start to the campaign following their big victory at home to Manchester Gregorians. Their 6-2 win came thanks to goals from Brad Aspinall, Daryl Cope, Ross Farrington, Daniel Gunning, Obua Mugalula and Dom Shepherd and puts them top of the table after 3 games.
Just behind them are Dukinfield Town are one of two teams to have a 100% record. Town welcomed Chadderton Res to Woodhams Park for a tie which saw Chaddy lose out in a five-goal thriller for the second time this season. Mitchell Andrew netted twice for Town to add to Carl Riley’s strike to deny the visitors their first points of the season despite Oumar Camara and Thomas Jones’ goals.
Heyside, the other side with a perfect start, registered a 4-1 against Walshaw Sports at Crompton House. Mark Hopwood’s first half brace helped the home side and was later joined on the score sheet by Adam Dale and Daniel Dunn to round off the scoring.
After a win on the opening day, Rochdale Sacred Heart suffered a second successive defeat as they were well beaten by Springhead on home soil. Matthew Barlow, Nathan Redmon and Adam Webbe were all on target for visitors as they shocked the Fox Park faithful to earn their side their first win of the season.
Heywood St James got their first points of the season in an enthralling game at the Phoenix Ground as they edged out Royton Town by the odd goal in seven. Jack Martin, Michael Itela, Brad Sullivan and George Powell all scored for Jimmies to help put their opening day defeat well and truly behind them.
After toppling the champions in midweek, Bolton County could only get a draw at Cromley Road as they drew 1-1 with Stockport Georgians, who themselves had a healthy win on Wednesday. Carl Airey got County’s goal in a game which saw their goalkeeper Charlie Helsby steal the headlines. The stopper saved two of the three penalties awarded to Georgians to see them through to gain a point to leave both teams unbeaten.
Old Alts bounced back from a heavy defeat in midweek as they claimed all three points from their game with Beechfield United. Joe Lewis, Conor Kingsley and a Sam Cummins penalty sealed the win at Salford Sports Village to inflict the hosts’ second defeat from their first three games.
Moorside Rangers made it two wins from their first two games after seeing off Altrincham Hale at Blessed Thomas Halford School. A Jack Booth goal was added to by braces from both Michael Gill and Kaden Goodman to seal a 5-0 victory, inflicting a second defeat for Hale in as many games.
Elton Vale also made it two wins from two after they left Platt Lane with all three points against Govan Athletic. James Bridge, Tom Brooks and Lee Bruce all scored for Vale to put them in second place with Sam Shaw getting a late consolation for the hosts.
Newly promoted Middleton Colts started their Division One campaign in a 3-2 defeat at home to Atherton Town. Jordan Lloyd, Gareth Shaw and Adam Boydell all netted for Town at Hopwood Hall to earn their side a second win from two.
Tintwistle Athletic got off to a winning start after they travelled to Bolton Lads & Girls Club who won on the opening day of the season. Tom Burns (2) and James Wilson scored for Tinny to get themselves the points despite two late goals from Ashley Womack for BLGC.
Danny Pearson’s late wonder strike earned his side a well-fought win at Uppermill to get Wilmslow Albion’s first points of the season. Ibrahima Thiam had earlier opened the scoring before Tommy Bunn levelled things up for Uppermill. The last-gasp goal gave the visitors the win to deny Uppermill their first points of the season.
In the other game of the day, Boothstown humbled last week’s league leaders, East Manchester, seeing them off 4-0 at Wright Robinson College in their opening game of the season.
Hollinwood sit top of the table after their narrow 2-1 defeat of Astley & Tyldesley on Saturday. The win adds to their opening day victory and are one of three remaining teams with a 100% start.
After their blistering win last weekend, AFC Monton were held to a 1-1 draw at home to new boys FC Unsworth who join The Ammies on four points from their opening two games. Liam Foster got Monton’s goal for whom sit in second place.
Wythenshawe Amateurs Res join those two teams on four points following a 3-1 win at home to Hindsford Res to move into fourth spot. Carl Brady, Luke Hibbert and Stephen Herdman were all on target for the hosts as they picked up the W at Hollyhedge Park.
Bolton United made their MFL debut with a winning start as they saw off Breightmet United at St Johns Park. Bolton ran out 3-1 in their very first game in this league and face the league leaders on their next outing.
Avro Res made it a winning start after they got their campaign underway with a 4-2 win over Hindley Juniors at the Vestacare Stadium with Max Davidson, Mason Dunkley, Jamie Wolden and Kyle Parsons all scoring for the hosts.
