Wednesday Night Round-Up

By Simon Harrison

Wednesday night saw the remaining four teams complete the midweek schedule with bragging rights up for grabs in both games.

Avro looked to regain top spot after being dislodged by Wythenshawe Amateurs on Tuesday as they welcomed Royton Town to the Vestacare Stadium. Town will have had their eye on their own ambitions of moving up to second place with a healthy win and end their opponents’ 100% start.

But the home side’s perfect start to the season continued thanks to a 3-2 win in front of another good crowd at the Vestacare Stadium. Nathan Lamb and Alex Caveney had given the visitors a 2-1 lead at the half time break with Michael Stockdale getting Avro’s first of the evening but James Hampson and Duncan Knott were on target in the second period for Avro to seal a 3-2 win and send their side back to the top of the table.

Meanwhile, Wright Robinson saw East Manchester host Dukinfield Town in a local derby which has been quite evenly contested over the years. East had been involved in two consecutive 2-2 draws following their opening day win while Town looked to bounce back from their defeat at the weekend in what has been a mixed bag so far.

And it proved to be yet another tight game with just one goal separating the two sides. Wes Harney’s second half penalty was enough to give East Manchester the win and claim bragging rights over their local rivals to move the Gorton outfit up to 5th place and extend their unbeaten start to the campaign.

Wednesday 23rd August
Avro 3-2 Royton Town
East Manchester 1-0 Dukinfield Town
