Presidents Update - August 2023
Well we're off and running for the 23/24 season, I know they say time passes quicker as you age, feels like I've only been away from football for about a week, but anyway here we go again!
This weekend saw the normal pre season Terry Wood and Norman Noden cup games, and congratulations to Uppermill who beat RSH despite having 2 players sent off - but a special mention has to go to their keeper who had a great game and made several important saves.
The other match saw last seasons serial cup winners, Tintwistle, taking on Govan. Played on the plastic at Fallowfield, it was a good game and Govan were their usual slick selves and went into a quick lead but Tintwistle came out for the second half and bossed the first 20 mins but only managed to pull one back. After that Govan took back control and ran out comfortable winners in the end. Congratulations.
League action starts this weekend with a couple of Friday fixtures, a new departure for the MFL, but I hope one that proves to be popular with clubs and players and becomes a regular feature, if, for some reason it doesn't I'm certain you will let me know!!
It's also traditional at the start of the season for me to mention discipline, so I won't disappoint. There is a move at the FA to clean up the game and, as ever, it starts at the grassroots level rather than Premier League, although a couple of cards in the Community Shield showed the intent. Please can I ask that you behave yourselves on and off the pitch.
I will, as usual, do my best to get round all the grounds this season to renew old acquaintances and meet some of our new clubs so hopefully I will see you all at sometime and, where possible, share a beer and where not, a cup of coffee....no sugar in mine please.
Good luck to all of you stay safe and enjoy your footy fix BUT PLEASE BEHAVE!
